Research suggests the board-superintendent relationship does more to determine the effectiveness of education in schools than any other single factor. Using the National School Board Association’s Key Work of School Boards, we will explore the roles of board and superintendent; present real-life scenarios; identify "what went right" and “what went wrong;” and discuss strategies for building a positive working relationship with the board/superintendent team. Discussion will include communication, establishing norms, the importance of board training, and gaining a better understanding of the difference between oversight and management of schools.
