Traditionally, schools have been reluctant to offer intensive interventions and therapeutic services such as speech therapy, occupational, and physical therapy, without declaring a child to be disabled and in need of special education supports. This can lead to the unnecessary classification and labeling of children, just to grant them access to readily available school-based services. To address this issue, a series of structured intervention and therapeutic programs have been created to offer supports to all children in need, without the need to develop 504 plans and IEPs. This session will explore how to develop these school-based interventions and therapeutic programs, and their immediate and long-term benefits. We will also discuss how to overcome potential obstacles and challenges to program development and implementation.
